Date of declaration: May 2013

The Biosphere Reserve Mariñas Coruñesas and Terras do Mandeo is located in the area of the Cantabrian-Atlantic coast of Galicia, in the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula. It comprises an area of 113,969.7 land hectares and 2,754.8 sea hectares. It includes all 18 municipalities in the province of A Coruña, with a population of approximately 190,000 inhabitants.

This territory consists mainly of two major basins, those of the rivers Mero and Mandeo, as well as other small coastal watersheds and coastal and mountain ecosystems harbouring a great biological diversity. This area also houses a great cultural diversity linked to the use of natural resources (fertilizers, honey production, etc.), which have made possible the maintenance of communities and conservation of indigenous breeds of cattle.
